Why is it bad to paint the ceiling?

I heard that when you're painting a room, you should never paint the ceiling. Why so?

And also, is it bad if the ceiling is painted? Because it bothers me otherwise. (I have OCD, and I'm sure it'll bug the crap out of me if the ceiling isn't painted)

Thanks. Why is it bad to paint the ceiling?
That is an ';Old Wives Tale'; that no longer means anything.

Go ahead and paint the ceiling. All the decorator shows now paint ceilings if needed for the look or after repairs.

Generally use a lighter tone to open the room, if very high ceilings you can use a darker tone to help bring it together.

Cover your floors and furniture well. Watch out for splatters, don't stand under the roller. Good luck. Why is it bad to paint the ceiling?
I wish I had a hundred blank rooms so that everytime someone says ';You shouldn't do this...'; I could do it and prove them wrong. Your room should be nothing more than what you want it to be. Some people say painting the ceiling makes a room look smaller, but in some instances, is that really so bad? Who says our rooms need to look like wide sprawling spaces all the time? Yes a more open room can look good, but some would also argue that having a room painted with dark colors, etc, would make a room seem cozy and warm. The rules apply only to how you interpret them, nothing more. I've also heard that dark colors make the room feel more like a vast space when accented with lighter colors, kind of like when you are camping, and it's dark, but you know that there is endless space beyond your little camp fire. If you want your ceiling painted, by all means, paint it.
I don't know why anyone would advise against painting a ceiling. It is one of my favorite surfaces to add color or other decorative touches - always an interesting surprise! If the room is very small, you can do a very light, warm shade of tan to give warmth but keep the space open. If you have a larger room and, especially, high ceilings, have fun!

You can creep the paint up from the wall onto the ceiling about a foot in and top off with a simple piece of molding - then paint the middle of the ceiling a soft shade of white or a light complimentary color to the wall color.

In my small kids' bathroom, I painting the top half of the wall in a denim blue (white wainscot below) and painted the ceiling the same blue - looks so great! In my teeny-tiny powder room, I installed copper tin squares over the entire ceiling (9 foot high).

The best thing about paint is if you try something and it doesn't work, just repaint! One of the lowest-cost decorating tools available.
I suffered from OCD in college...OCD meaning Old Crappy Dorm!)

Just kidding.

Seriously though...

Ceilings are usually painted white....the specific kind of white is called ceiling white.

What ever color you're painting the walls, you're painting and it will look fresher than the ceiling. You'll want to give the ceiling a fresh coat of paint to make the room look complete.

Also, before painting, be sure to remove any wall and doorway trim...pain that separate...usually white semi gloss to make cleaning easy. If the trim is left on and painted over, it will look like the paint job was rushed.

Good luck.
It's not bad to paint the ceiling, like everyone else said. I just want to add that you should use a flat sheen on the ceiling, even if you're walls are a little more glossy. Glossy ceilings look bad. That's just my opinion, of course, but if you buy ';ceiling paint'; at the store you'll notice that it's always flat.
Hi Safera!!

I have never heard that you should never paint the ceiling. We have always painted our ceiling!! What's up to not painting the ceiling?...You've got a nice fresh coat of paint on the walls and the ceiling still looks like...YUK!!! Paint your ceiling!!
you have to paint the ceiling. it will yellow and look like crap if you don't. We normally paint them a light color so to not make the rooms look smaller

it makes the room look smaller if you have it painted anything other then white.
