What is the best way to paint a stippled ceiling?

Would it be brush or roller, and if roller ,which head? What is the best way to paint a stippled ceiling?
what type of stipple is it? has it been painted before? if it has not been painted you have to use an alkyd flat ceiling paint if it has been painted then just a latex ceiling flat will work just fine. you can either use a split foam roller if you use one of these don't apply much pressure to it or it will drip. i buy the long napped roller sleeves that they sell to re coat asphalt driveways. they are have the price and when you are finished then just dispose of them. this can be messy so if you can't remove all of the rooms contents then pile it in the centre of the room and cover everything with plastic. then cover the floor with drop sheets. when ever painting a ceiling you shouldn't paint in one direction. roll the celining in different directions that way you keep a nice wet edge and on a flat ceiling you will never have roller marks. What is the best way to paint a stippled ceiling?
A roller with a medium nap. Be sure to do at least 2 coats as the stipple does tend to cause missed bits that only show up 3 weeks on. Do one coat in one direction and the 2nd coat in the direction across the first coat. Do not press too hard on the roller and refill the roller very often. Do not keep rolling just because the roller appears to be leaving a trace. If you do this the paint will be thinly spread and even with 2 coats could look patchy.

Matt paint is the best for a stipple ceiling.
Using a roller is a messy business, but it is a lot quicker than using a brush. If you are painting a ceiling with a roller, you should go for the fluffy type ones instead of sponge. They are less messy. Personally, I would go for a cheap paintbrush which is nice and wide (about 5/6 inches) and a smaller one for cutting in. I usually use a fence panel brush which has short bristles and a very light handle. Heavy emulsion brushes with long bristles make your arm ache after a while.
Is the surface uneven -

I used an emulsion brush - the bristle are longer and finer than other brushes so it covers into the uneven surface.

Emulsion brushes can be had at any hardware diy place costs just a bit more then the other brushes but worth it.

HOPE THIS HELPS -
The best way is a long haired roller..However, no matter what you use you will still have splashes caused by the stippling..

Ensure you have the whole room covered with dust sheets before painting the ceiling..
a good quality brush and roller. may i suggest a purdy monarch elite brush 2 inch and a lifetimer roller
roller with a heavy nap.
A particularly soft roller and an umbrella
