Michelangelo began the project for Pope Julius II in 1508 and finished the ceiling in 1512. Bramante was responsible for much of the other rennovations of St. Peters at the time, and it was assumed he or Raphael would complete the painting for the Sistine Chapel. However, Raphael, jealous and competitive with primary sculptor Michelangelo, teasingly offered the job to Buonarroti, saying ';a sculptor could never produce a painting';. In a way, Raphael was trying to prove Michelangelo a poorly educated or well rounded artist. During the time when Michelangelo was painting the Sistine, Raphael was coincidentally also painting for Pope Julius II, in what are now known was the Raphael Rooms. He painted Justice/Prudence, The School of Athens, Parnassus, and Disputation of the holy Sacrament, in the Room of the ';Segnatura,'; in the years 1508-1511. He finished his masterpiece a year before Michelangelo- But it did nothing to hurt Michelangelo's reputation, in fact allowed him to shine as a true master more so than anyone ever imagined. Everyone knew Michelangelo the sculptor, but after 1512 they recognized him as a brilliant painter as well.
3 years and it is Michelangelo
0 years. Michael Angelo was too busy making frozen microwavable Italian entrees and bottled sauces to sell to Albertson's stores.

Michelangelo, on the other hand, painted from 1508 to 1512. That means it took him 4 years in all.
