How do I prevent stains appearing through ceiling paint?

I had a slight leak on a ceiling some months ago. This appears to be completely dry now. However there is a stain appearing through the new paint on the ceiling. How do I prevent the stain appearing through several coats of silk emulsion paint? How do I prevent stains appearing through ceiling paint?
hi im a decorator and all you need to do is apply a coat of oil based undercoat to the marks allow 24hrs to dry and then emulsion as normal this will cover the stain.hope this helpsHow do I prevent stains appearing through ceiling paint?
buy a sprsy can of stain blocker and spray the area before painting
Kilz stain blocker works well in most cases. However, sometimes the stain is resistant to Kilz. If this occurs, coat the stain with lacquer then use the Kilz and two coats of paint. This from a g.c.. Good luck.
I agree with many here - Kilz rocks!! One or two coats, a topcoat of paint %26amp; *poof* stain is gone!!

If only I could use Kilz on my carpets :)
Great stuff - original name was 'Kil-Stain' [hardware or paint store should know what you mean] which was designed for exactly your purpose--there are probably many other brands [one noted above from another answerer?]. Daub it all over to completely cover stain, then let it dry for 24 hrs--then paint over it and Voila! Magic stuff entirely.
you can buy a product made by ronseal from most DIY shopc called stain blocker the instruction are on the tin follow them exactly and it will do exactly what it says on the tin
you can buy paint which will permanantly stop the stain re appearing. make sure the cause of the stain is identified and sorted before using or you will simply move the problem to another area.

i use ';Johnstones'; waterproof paint which costs about 拢6 for a small can at DIY stores.
Sounds like there might be some residual damp.

Take it right back to base and apply a marine paint. Decorate as normal after that.
Gloss paint?
Kilz from Home Depot or Lowes!
1) Stop the leak

2) Shellac

3) Kilz

4) Ceiling paint
spray paint in the required colour - like the ones you get for cars.
paint over the stain with an oil based paint (eg. gloss or satinwood) of a similar colour to the ceiling and when that is dry repaint with your emulsion and that should stop the stain bleeding through.
By applying a coat of Kiltz and then repaint it one coat and your done.
Two coats of Kilz primer, then repaint. They have spray Kilz in a can that is really easy for ceilings. You can find it at Lowes, Home Depot or Walmart.
The brown water stain will continue to leak through ordinary emulsion whether it is matt or silk. you have to seal it...

There are products on the market that you can use to do this and as a professional decorator I would use Zinsser B-I-N you can buy it in spray or liquid form and it contains shellac which will stop the stain from bleeding through, you can paint over it 45 minutes later. However do you want to go to that expense? For DIY a coat or two of an oil based paint will probably suffice, try undercoat and leave 16 hours between coats or you can cause the paint to peel
